We are exploring careers and the world of work this month in guidance lessons. First, we are discovering our interests, talents, and activities. Then we are matching those to one of the six different types of career paths: business, creating, fixing and technology, helping, nature, and health. There are hundreds of jobs under each career path. The most important thing I want students to take away is that it’s never too early to begin thinking about your future. They can be whatever you want to be -- whether it’s a doctor, teacher, construction worker, farmer, race car driver, mail carrier, nurse, etc. But it all begins with a little planning and knowledge. It is important for students to explore new interests and activities. If they pursue a career that matches their interests, they will end up in a career that fulfills them. They will live to work instead of just working to live. Their interests may change several times throughout their lives, and that is okay. Although our students are only in elementary school, they need to know that it is important for them to come to school and work and learn to the best of their ability. This way, they will have a good foundation and the background knowledge they need to pursue any career they desire. This is also a great age to explore various interests. Click on the photo below to see the career paths posters we are using: Like many things, your child’s academic and career aspirations often start with you. If you believe they can accomplish anything then they will believe it – and achieve it. Help your children learn about the many different career options that exist. The poster below includes free activities to help children explore careers: Visit my career development website for career exploration games, videos, and tons of information for students, parents, and teachers: www.nstewartcareercenter.weebly.com.
