Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! I am so excited to begin this year and I am looking forward to seeing all of the children’s smiling faces! The year will be a new and exciting journey as our school embarks upon our new Leader In Me program. I am interested to see how much our students will grow this year and to watch them become leaders in the community and in their daily lives!
As we begin the year, here are some tips to help your family make a smooth transition from summer break:
- Set a bedtime routine. Make your child gets at least a full eight hours of sleep before each school day so they will be well rested and ready to learn.
- Make sure your child eats a nutritious breakfast so they will have the energy they need to start the day and sustain them through the morning. You also have the opportunity to bring your child to school early so they can eat breakfast on campus at a cost.
- Make sure your child has the school supplies they need. If you need help getting school supplies, let me know!
- Set expectations with your child. Explain to them how important education is in their life now and how impactful it will be in the future. You are your child’s first and best advocate. If you are excited about school and their education, chances are they will be too.
- Be involved! From PTO to classroom volunteer to even just speaking with your child’s teacher after school one day a week, there are many ways you can be involved. Research shows that when parents are involved in their child’s education, students have:
Better school attendance and improved behavior
Greater enrollment in postsecondary institutions.
Benefits for parents include:
Improved communication with teachers
Increased education and parenting skills
Improved attitude toward school and school personnel.
For ideas on how to get involved, contact your child’s teacher or Martha Ybarra, Bassetti’s
parent coordinator.
- And last but not least, get to know your child’s school counselor! School counselors make a measurable impact in every student’s life, assisting with academic, career and personal/social development. When you need information or assistance, I can help you get in touch with the appropriate school officials; learn about school policies on behavior, attendance, and dress; and stay connected with the school in many other ways. I can also help you locate resources in the community when you need them and get information on programs that can benefit your child. School counselors provide services not only to students in need, but to all students. If your child is having a problem at school, I will work with you to find solutions. In short, I am here for your child! Use me! I may not have all the answers, but I will help you find them.
Here’s to a wonderful new school year! I look forward to this exciting journey with all of you.
